Iconic images from the man who multiplied Audrey and gave us The Doe Eye
The Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography returns to the south of France this week for its 26th year (29 April - 2 May). Directed by Jean-Pierre Blanc, the festival showcases work by fashion designers and photographers selected through competitions.
Over three days, the 20 shortlisted photographers and fashion designers will present their work in either fashion shows or group exhibitions to the public and to a jury of industry professionals, who will choose an overall winner from each category. Generous grants and residencies at the New York School of Visual Arts make this a highy coveted competition amongst young fashion designers and photographers.
In addition to the competition, Jean-Pierre Blanc, Michel Mallard and Raphaëlle Stopin have curated special exhibitions that will run until 29 May. Highlights include Erwin Blumenfeld/Modern Beauty, dedicated to the prominent 20th century fashion photographer, whose works today still appear highly modern and bold. The exhibition provides an historical perspective on contemporary image-making and includes photographs taken from fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Blumenfeld’s images explore close-ups, effects of transparency and montages, and all serve to capture the sensuality and beauty of women.
