The College Art Association’s 99th Annual Conference, which opens tomorrow, is the largest and most important art convention in United States. During its four day-run, thousands of artists, students and art academics will take part in hundreds of events including professional development workshops, panel discussions, exhibitions and tours.
One of the highlights is set to be Capitalist Art about Capitalism: From Jasper Johns's Ballantine Ale (1960) to Jeff Koons's New Shelton Wet-Dry Double Decker, (1981) on Friday afternoon, which will see Dr Alistair Rider of the University of St Andrews discuss the topic of Carl Andre and the Commodity Form. An expert on experimental art practices from the 1960s and the 1970s in North America Dr Rider is one of the foremost writers on Andre, Minimalist sculptor and elusive artist, and the author of Phaidon's forthcoming title: Carl Andre - Things in Their Elements (released May 2011).
