Card Game, Restaurant in Xinrong

A signed limited edition silver gelatin print of Card Game, Restaurant in Xinrong accompanies Danny Lyon’s Deep Sea Diver Collector’s Edition. Signed by Lyon, the print gives the chance to own a piece of photojournalistic history from Lyon’s many trips to the Shanxi Province in northeast China between 2005 and 2009. By immersing himself so completely in the every lives of the people he photographs, Lyon records moments rarely seen by foreigners.

Card Game, Restaurant in Xinrong demonstrates Lyon’s uncanny ability to settle effortlessly into the people and culture of every area of the world he visits. The girl in the photograph remains unaware, or at least uninhibited, by Lyon’s Leica lens as he captures this fleeting moment where she peeps at her competitor’s cards while no one else seems to be looking.

Rebellious photojournalist, explorer and social documenter, the acclaimed Danny Lyon pioneered a form of photography that became known as the ‘New Journalism’.

Reacting against news publications which began to saturate media during the 1960s, such as Life and Look, Lyon dedicated himself throughout his remarkable career to producing photographs not to sell magazines, but to create images that were as he puts it - “stronger, more truthful and more powerful than Life magazine.”

He delved into the lives of the people he photographed, spending time with his subjects and by so doing inspired a future generation of photographers.

Lyon’s photographs aimed not to create or construct “photo-stories”, a term used by photojournalists and editors alike, because, in his own words, his images were “reality itself and their power came from the power of the individual people I pictured and believed in.”

Memories of Myself and Deep Sea Diver demonstrate the way in which Lyon has been able to settle into virtually any world, in any area of the globe and with people from all walks of life, to record with empathy, the day to day realities of their existence.

As celebrated photojournalist Michel Guerrin wrote in Le Monde: ‘When Danny Lyon began to talk to his “subjects”, he changed the history of photography. These are iconic images from the creation of New Journalism.’
