Inside the belly of the monster: Anish Kapoor's Leviathan

'A single object, a single shape, a single colour,' is how Anish Kapoor summed up Leviathan, his response to the Monumenta challenge this year. Radically departing from Christian Boltanski’s busy collage-like approach in Personnes for Monumenta 2010, Kapoor has filled the 13,500 square metre space with a single cavernous entity which surges through the Grand Palais roof.

Leviathan attacks the senses in it's all consuming colour and sheer scale. Kapoor manipulates the viewer's spatial awareness using 'strictly physical means, to offer a completely new and emotional and philosophical experience,' explains the artist. The title, Leviathan, referencing both the biblical sea monster and Hobbes, makes the work feel simultaneously poetic and foreboding, while still being accessible to the viewer.

The installation will be at the Grand Palais, Paris until the 23 June.
