Tomi Ungerer, the poster boy for illustrated stories
Previews from the Reykjavik Art Museum exhibition of the prolific author and illustrator
Tomi Ungerer is primarily known as an author and illustrator, although his wide ranging career has also included stints in advertising, graphic design and sculpture. At this year's annual Reykjavik Arts Festival 2011 (20 May - 5 June), Thérèse Willer, director of the Tomi Ungerer Museum in Strasbourg, will give a lecture on Ungerer - who turns 80 in November - and his extensive works.
The lecture accompanies the Tomi Ungerer - Posters and Illustrations exhibition at the Hafnarhús Reykjavik Art Museum (21 May - 24 July). Ungerer's diverse accomplishments and adventurous spirit make him a fascinating character - almost to rival those he creates in his children's books. For those keen to learn more, or emulate the success, in some small way, of Tomi Ungerer's prolific talents, attendance at the talk this Saturday (23 May) is a must.
Having lived and worked internationally, Ungerer draws on his experiences; social commentary, autobiographical accounts and an indulgence in the absurd are illustrated in his children's books. Key works include: Otto, Ungerer's part autobiographical tale of a teddy bear, separated from his Jewish owner, living through World War II, who is reunited with his original owner 50 years later. While Adelaide is one such inventive story about a kangaroo with wings, exploring the importance of individuality. Every book carries a message. Although published in 28 languages, it is only recently that his work has been reissued in English by Phaidon.
In addition to writing, Ungerer's books are brimming with beautiful illustrations, some of which are on display at the exhibition. Often laced with humorous satire, he raises awareness about poignant issues. 'This is the greatest luxury in the world - to be able to write and to draw,' says Ungerer.
At a festival that celebrates international arts, one of the highlights will be the lecture on the works and workings of the very talented Tomi Ungerer.
